There are a good many different ways of spending money - we all get that.
However, in Scotland, Business Gateway's often provide funding for small businesses. Some get grants, others get loans. Some are running startup businesses, others have been doing business for some time.
The below chart shows a breakdown of some of the more popular types of grants. Which of these, or others not shown, could do your business the most good?

  • How to deal with a late payer?DateToday 9:38 am
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I've been involved in an ongoing project for a company for almost a year, and recently they emailed me to say the project was ending. I billed them for the last project, and when I didn't receive payment, I emailed him a polite reminder. Now he's not responded, which is unusual, as we parted on good terms, and he's always paid before.

Now the invoice is 2 months late - should I give him the benefit of the doubt an email him again (3rd time), or is there something else I should be doing? Fyi, I didn't issue a contract for the project, so not sure where I'd stand on that one?

Just interested in how other businesses deal with these situations?

  • Milk Alternative Prices?DateToday 9:36 am
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I'm in the early stages of planning a coffee/food business venture aimed at the vegan market. I'm just trying to find out roughly how much you can acquire milk alternatives (soy, almond & coconut) for from wholesalers. Most wholesalers only let current trade see prices etc, so I'm just looking for personal experiences from supplier to supplier? Thanks for any help!

  • Why pay for office 365?DateToday 9:35 am
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

As we move more and move away from applications. Eg Outlook was a nightmare at times, plus issues with imap/pop3.... switched to Gmail for business, all problem solved.

Sage - problems with software and support - Switch to online based Xero. Problems solved.

Expensive phone lines depending on expensive hardwire - Switch to Voipfone.

This week we've had problems with excel and word on our computer. Will office 365 solves local application issues? We paid £100 a few years ago for Word and Excel 2010 I think it is. But 365 is that per year. Worth it? WE don't need the storage or anything else, just reliable applications with support.

    Thanks

  • Possibly time to update our cancellation policy?DateTue Sep 19, 2017 1:57 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I am just being sensitive but I have just been "confronted" by a disgruntled guest who booked a room a week ago for tomorrow night and wants to cancel. She was mad at my staff and I had to call her back. She didn't even give me a chance to say that I was OK with the cancellation and we didn't hold any payment details for this one anyway. She proceeded to lecture me that she makes many bookings for accommodation and never come across this cancellation period before, ever! I actually found myself attempting to justify my long-standing policies with a bleating "...we're a small business"! I felt a bit pathetic probably because she may have a point - even a little one!

On one hand, our 7 day cancellation policy fits into our current way of operating business but on the other hand, modern technology may of swept away the need for such an extended period and I was wondering what other business people might have to say on the matter?

  • China Prices Going Up - Big?DateTue Sep 19, 2017 1:56 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I have been buying from a number of trading partners for many years.
From online research etc it does seem that costs in the far east continue to rise.
My worry was the little coverage that 'dollar weakness' seems to be getting.
If the dollar was to drop - say below 6.0 vs Yuan - then the cost implications for every UK importer would be huge.
Given consumer demand weakness and a devalued sterling currency this would be very serious surely???
Can any other members confirm similar situations with their far eastern suppliers?

I have years of B2B telesales/telemarketing experience and I am pretty good at it. I like to think anyway!

I have saved up and want to start my own "call centre" (hate the word I prefer sales office) selling a tangible product over the phone B2B. What are some some simple products you could sell over the phone B2B that don't require much technical knowledge or the need for additional technical staff for installation/implementation?

  • Ideas On Marketing Bands/gigs?DateMon Sep 18, 2017 2:43 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

Hi there everyone, this is my first real post here.

I have just started up a promotions company, focusing on recording artists and selling them, kind of like a management agency I guess.
I'm looking for any ideas people have about ways to market the new bands and get people to the gigs. We are throwing an album recording party, which we will be charging door sales and drinks sales to generate some cash, but I was hoping someone on here would have some experience with radio advertising, and how to go about doing that?
Sorry if my post is a little vague, I'm still new to this whole business thing
    Any replies would be amazing

  • Best Offline Marketing Techniques?DateMon Sep 18, 2017 2:41 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I am new here and see that many business owners use different techniques for offline marketing, however I am wondering which ones are really the best? I own a small home care services agency for the elderly and other home bound individuals. I already pay for advertising space in a free local newspaper. I also have an ad on the local radio, however since that is quite the expense (and in this line of work, useless, but I'm under contract) I do not have that much run time. I also have hung up fliers in local businesses and put a flier in the paper. I also did direct mail once and tried mailing letters to other business that may give a referrals, introducing the business and myself...none of these things have really produced success and am wondering if I am just doing something wrong...or maybe not the right thing...any suggestions?

  • Service Business - Do Yard Signs Work?DateMon Sep 18, 2017 2:39 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

    Hi,
My question for the forum. Does yard sign advertising work? Especially for a service business? It seems low cost(will cost me about $303 for printing of 100 signs, stakes, and delivery).

    My 18x24 sign reads:

    UGLY DOOR?
    $200 DOOR REFINISHING
    Our Number * Website

and it's dark blue lettering with white background.

What is everyone's thoughts on using yard signs at strategic intersections for generating leads?

  • More Clients With Less Advertising?DateMon Sep 18, 2017 2:38 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

    Hello,

I am very confused as to why the less I advertise or market my company the more clients I get and the more I advertise the slower business gets? I am fairly new to owning my own company and had enough success to begin that I quit a job with Microsoft. Since then Ive had to reapply for a job for steady income, took a huge paycut and do something I have absolutely no interest in other than the paycheck every two weeks to keep bills paid. I have no overhead expenses and I either meet my clients or remotely help them. I started on craigslist repairing computers and have since added a few freelance web devs to help. I do both myself but because repairing computers takes up most my time with the business I contract out the design jobs.

I am now in the process of getting on google and every other search engine, built my site, business cards and flyers. Go door to door, car to car and meet people daily and it seems the more I do the less I get. I literally had three ads on craigslist and had 20 clients in a week. Since then maybe a 100 in the next few months.

    Any advice?

  • How do you keep up all the expenses?DateSat Sep 16, 2017 2:26 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

I help him since he's started his business. I don't mind helping my parents because family is important and it's part of my business too. Owning a business isn't easy and can be quite expensive than working for someone else because the more people he's hired, the more he's going to pay because there are insurance and employment benefits and etc. How do you keep up all the expenses in a business because there are a lot of bills to pay in order to keep the business going. I want to know how do you keep up all the expenses when the business isn't doing well? Do you usually have a plan to limit the spending or something?

    Hello,
I'm just starting a small business and looking to use an American Express business card (ex. Business Gold, Business Platinum) for expenses. The may also periodically be used from some trips and expenses that are both business and personal. I have no experience with AMEX's Open platform or its expense tracking/management tools. Can anyone tell me if AMEX provides a relatively easy way to categorize, flag, etc. certain expenses to differentiate business from personal?

I am currently considering a number of options for a new business. All of these would require some level of finance. Is it better that I save up, go to an independent lender or go to my bank? I obviously want to avoid any unnecessary costs and overheads.

  • Wondercom to TPG Plan issues?DateFri Sep 15, 2017 4:01 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

Has anyone else had a phone call from TPG who want to screw you on new plans?
I started off with a monthly plan on Wondercom which I paid a connection fee and then paid $69 a month for unlimited internet. Mind you TPG gave me no notification of the change over at all and as I understand it, it happened a few months ago.
TPG just called me up out of the blue and gave me the option of either going on a $59 a month plan with a 18 month contract or pay $150 and then go on a $99 a month plan instead (I am already connected why do I need to pay another connection fee).

maybe a little sensationalised. But at least I have your attention!?
4ish incredible years of service with TPG...not a single lapse in speed, not one outage and zero complaints. Its been too good to be true. So I come here looking for answers.
As of about 5 days ago when the clock strikes approximately 7-8pm, all the way through to the morning, this incredible service goes back to the dark ages of dial-up. No netflix, no TV streaming, no surfing reddit...I cant even load whirlpool without waiting 10 minutes for a page to load.

  • Can anyone help with my high latency issue?DateFri Sep 15, 2017 3:57 pm
Topic by jensenbreck. Forum: RS Sellers

    Hello,
Looking for help diagnosing a high latency issue I have had for a couple of months now (early July).

I have TPG FTTB provided by my body corporate (so don't have an account or username to contact TPG with) but they aren’t being of much help. Used to play lots of BF1 but my latency is now constantly over 200ms (download and upload are still great though above 20mb) making the game unplayable.
I have tried lots of things to determine the issue / fault. Tried different routers (Linksys 4200, Apple Airport), different devices (laptops and the PS4) but it seems to be the internet connection. I generally get good ping / traceroute data as far as I can tell but bad lag on games.
Took my PS4 to a friend’s place who has internet speeds much lower than mine but the lag is fine so it isn’t my PS4 or game or servers.
Another interesting thing? is that it takes over 30 minutes for any other device / router to get a connection when I was switching devices to try and determine what the fault is. DHCP issues?
Checked my router logs couldn’t see any errors that would affect it?

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
